IGN: How will the missions play out? What is the structure of the story based single player mode? Motoyama: The missions are story-driven in that you select from several missions and then clear one mission at a time. And then, there's the Multi-Player Mode where one person plays with a CPU that has been put together. Then, there's "Challenge Mode," where one person or two persons cooperate simultaneously to clear one mission after the other. While going for the 3-part head, upper body, and lower body damage system and the accurate reach in the side view like in Tekken and Soul Calibur, there's a breakthrough target lock camera system that allows for attacks, over 60 individual characters, really sharp AI, deep attacks that use weaponry, a counter-attack system in which most attacks can be dodged or avoided, a multi-player mode that you can play for a long time in, and all kinds of great stuff prepared that will go beyond everyone's expectations!!! IGN: What other modes are there besides the single player story? Motoyama: First off, in Story Mode, you throw down with a variety of different characters in a total of 100 missions, and there's a "Free Mode" in which you aim for a Ranking Score. IGN: On the other side, what is in Urban Reign that hardcore fighting game enthusiasts will enjoy? How deep is the combat system? Motoyama: If hard-core fighting game fans play Urban Reign, they will recognize that members from the staff of Tekken and Soul Calibur put it together. This game was developed with ease-of-play very much in mind. Bare-knuckle brawling, fighting with weapons, battles with up to 4 players, cooperative play with an AI partner - there's all kinds of fun and interesting play that has been prepared in this game. Through practicing, a tutorial, and so on, it's possible for even a beginner of fighting games to quickly acquire the same knowledge as a skilled player. However, there are a variety of different attack methods that have been prepared in this game. There's really only 2 main attack buttons. First off, there's no need for you to learn all of the moves for each character separately. You won't be disappointed - please look forward to this game! IGN: Describe how this is more accessible than traditional fighting games? What makes it fun to just pick up and play? Motoyama: I guarantee that this game is going to be a lot more "easy to play" than fighting games up until this point. IGN: How will this game compare to the upcoming generation fighting brawler games? Motoyama: There are a lot of innovative ideas in Urban Reign that will make it a standard in next-generation fighting games. There are also team attacks, double attacks, and brand-new attack methods that utilize weapons. This enables the player to directly let loose with all kinds of different moves in the story and multi-player mode that allows for 4-person simultaneous play. There's really smooth operational performance with game controls that allow even the casual player to be able to enjoy the game without learning lots of moves. I think we've been able to achieve all of these things in Urban Reign. IGN: What keeps the fighting genre fresh? What will this game give this generation of gamers to look forward to? Motoyama: Some things that are necessary in fighting games are: the smooth sensation of 60 frames, very simple yet very deep game controls, the evolution of multi-player mode, and also lots of new moves and attack methods that nobody's ever seen before. Urban Reign utilizes the functions of the PlayStation 2 to their fullest, and has the 60 frames per second quality of Tekken and Soul Calibur. You're working alongside a partner, busting out combos and attacking lots of enemies… I think we've managed to put together an attractive fighting game that nobody's ever seen before. Please picture the quality of Tekken and Soul Calibur with scenes in which there are multiple people doing battle. So, the conclusion to this was a fighting game involving multiple people. We are always thinking about fighting games of the future. As everyone knows, "Tekken" is the leading hand-to-hand fighting game franchise, while "Soul Calibur" is the leading weapons-based fighting game. OK then-here's my answers to the interview questions. IGN: What was it about this project that drew the team members away from SC and Tekken? What creatively can they do in UR that they couldn't do in SC and Tekken? Motoyama: Well, first off thank you very much for giving me the opportunity for an interview! I am deeply honored for this interview with IGN.
